Origin: Arid and semi-arid regions of Australia. Applicant: The University of Queensland (Dr Dion Harrison) The Centre for Native Floriculture, plant breeding and selection programme.
Characteristics: A compact, small herbaceous shrub, 150mm(H) x 400mm (W), The flowers are vibrant pink-purple (mauve) and are 40mm in diameter. A particular feature of this plant is that they flower all year round from January to December. The leaves are fine, with short internodes and greater basal branching forms a more compact plant habit.
Cultivation: Suited to well-drained sandy soils and has a high level of frost hardiness.
Propagation: Cuttings from semi-firm new growth.
Uses: Suitable for dryland shrub plantings. As a groundcover suitable for mass planting or it can be mixed in with shrubbery. Calandrinia balonensis ‘Mystique’ is also suitable for tubs and hanging baskets.
